Peace by Piece--Matthew 6:21

With Valentine's Day and Heart Health Month both in February, many of us have probably been thinking about hearts a lot lately. So, to close the month, a final thought . . . about the heart. Friends, may your treasures always lie where your hearts can be the fullest.

Warped Plastic #56

I've heard things that suggest all hope may not be lost for the popular toy retailer. But I had to use my Lego giraffe for something.

Peace by Piece--J.K. Rowling

Here's something you probably didn't know about my day job:

I'm a housekeeper at a hotel in Salt Lake City.

It's an in-between situation and I start a new job in my field next week, but for the past couple months, I've gotten to see a section of life that was always in front of me but which I never gave much thought.

In my specific role, I keep the hotel lobby beautiful. I scrub toilets in the public restrooms. I stock the pool with fresh towels. I follow people around with a mop and grumble in Gnomish as I wipe away their footprints (okay, that's a bit of an embellishment--I don't speak Gnomish).

I like my job.

I enjoy making the first impression for my hotel and overhearing guests remark how nice it is. I enjoy the satisfaction of work well done, the noticeable difference between when I first arrived on a scene and when I left it.

And I enjoy meeting those who believe in giving the cleaner the same respect as the CEO: the ones who thank me for my efforts, acknowledge that they're stepping on my just-perfected floor (which I cheerfully call job security), and even ask my name.

Let me tell you, it's an amazing feeling to be doing a job some might look down their noses at and have someone recognize you actually have a name, a life, a voice. That's a day-changer. That's a motivator.

Those are the best people.

Peace by Piece--Russell M. Nelson

We're our own worst critics. That's probably why I sometimes take criticism so personally: because no one is harder on me than I already am. My house consistently looks like a fight broke out between a toddler and a dumpster; I look at my phone so much some days I wouldn't know the weather if no one posted about it on social media; and the last time I went out to eat, the server told me to enjoy my meal and I said "you, too" like a freaking idiot.

I'm a mess, guys.

I go to the scriptures for comfort, which works, but sometimes it's like, Jesus says "love thy neighbor" and the last time I talked to my neighbor I said "Hi Robert" and her name was Angela, or Jesus says "don't judge" but then I go into a public restroom and find the sinks hardly look used for how much pee there is on the floor, or Jesus says "don't get angry" and I did just that, I left an angry reaction on a Facebook advertisement for fake Lego last week and WHY AM I LIKE THIS?

I'm trying. But sometimes who I want to be seems so, so far away, like a playoff championship for the Utah Jazz.

Thankfully, the same God who gives commandments also says He created us in His own image. He says to be patient with ourselves and keep trying. He loves us perfectly, right now--not a distant version of ourselves, but the current one, the messy one, the one that sometimes picks fights with strangers in Youtube comment threads.

And I don't mean to diminish what He's told us to do or not do, because those things are important. But if you're struggling under the weight of expectations; if no matter what you do it's not enough; if you look into the mirror and see less a work in progress than a total screw-up; then hold on, put down Instagram for a minute, and breathe.

You don't have to do it all right now. What matters is your direction--not your speed.

Peace by Piece--Kali Wallace

My favorite book of the year so far is City of Islands, by Kali Wallace. The story follows twelve-year-old Mara, a diver who discovers strange bones on the floor of the sea and accepts a mission to infiltrate a dark and dangerous island fortress. In a city where magic is sung and mages compete for status, Mara uncovers secrets that shake the society she lives in and change the course of her life forever. If you love well-developed characters, fascinating worlds, and edge-of-your-seat suspense, give this book a read!

Peculiar People #35

When I started my missionary service for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints over a decade ago, the U.S. military just happened to send my sister to the same city I was serving in. She lived there for the duration of my mission and returned to Utah mere weeks before I did, and my mission president allowed us to see each other now and then. I also had a cousin in another area of my mission, who I serendipitously ran into when I was there.

I'll admit that perhaps having family so close could have distracted other missionaries. But some of the days I worked the hardest were when I had seen those family members. Those interactions motivated me like nothing else, and my work improved. I still sacrificed a lot as a missionary, but I felt truly blessed.

Now, in a true practice-what-we-preach move, the family-focused Church is encouraging all missionaries to call or text home every week. And I'm so thrilled! This will be good for the missionaries, and it will be good for their families. It will strengthen relationships and move the work forward in ways we may never have anticipated.

And though my children are still very young, I am overjoyed to know I'll still get to talk to them regularly, in real time, if and when they choose to serve missions (and depending on reporting dates, I could have two or three out simultaneously at one point--that's a lot of kids to miss!). This is wonderful news for any parent to receive.

Peace by Piece--Izabella Scorupco

A book under a tree. The piano during a storm. A blanket on a cold night. Hugs from my children. These are some of the things that make me the happiest.
