Peace by Piece--Eleanor Roosevelt

My Grandma Read measured everything she said by three simple rules:

1. Is it kind?
2. Is it true?
3. Is it necessary?

I've gotten into my own fair share of scrapes when I haven't measured my words the way my grandmother did--but it has been enough trouble at least to know those reflective questions have their merits. One of these days I'll get there.

Peculiar People #40

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are preparing for our spring general conference, which means the rumor mill has been working overtime the past few weeks. I just hope everyone's as eager to be spiritually fed as they are to hear announcements that are most likely not going to happen (and no, Elder Bednar's dentist's barber's dog walker's former neighbor is not a valid source of information).

Of course, rather than just come out and say "knock it off," I chose to poke fun with a bit of satire.

Peace by Piece--Dallin H. Oaks

As we approach the end of another work week, here's your friendly reminder to feed not only your body, but your spirit, too. Read the good books, connect with nature, take time to think. Refuel.

Peace by Piece--Friedrich Nietzsche

"And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."

We all have our monsters and abysses. May we always keep the high ground--and our humanity.

Peace by Piece--Mosiah 24:14

I have many fond Boy Scout memories of summers spent in Utah's wilderness. My Scout troop's proudest tradition was a fifty-mile hike in the Uinta Mountains, during which every boy carried his food, shelter, and other supplies for the week on his own back. Naturally, I was always the guy who packed books. (You'd think so much reading would have given me some sense.)

One day I was studying the Book of Mormon by our little campfire and these words leaped out at me: "I will ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your [back]." The premortal Christ said this to an oppressed group of people who had more to worry about than physical weight on their shoulders, but I couldn't help but apply it to my own immediate situation. My back and shoulders hurt from carrying a heavy pack up and down mountains; if Christ was offering to ease burdens, I'd take it!

I've treasured and come to understand these words better over the years. I've remembered them through some major physical trials--but also mental, spiritual, emotional, social, and any other weight I could stuff into my proverbial pack. Some days, that's made all the difference.

Peace by Piece--Samuel Johnson

Most days, I don't feel strong. But I take it one day at a time--because sometimes, you've just got to hang on.

Peculiar People #38

We did everything right this time. We changed our clocks on Saturday night, got the kids to bed, made a blood oath that things would be different.

Then sometime early Sunday morning, our power went out . . . and our alarm clocks never went off. So we were an hour late and it still looked like we forgot about the time change.

Some of us just can't win.

Peace by Piece--Mark 4:39

One of many possible modern applications for these well-known words. Obviously if I thought technology was bad, I wouldn't be running this blog. But in this digital age, I've learned that a great portion of the peace I enjoy in life depends on how I use the tools I've been given--not only in terms of time spent, but also what I share and how I react to what I see. And sometimes, it's nice to simply unplug.

Warped Plastic #57

My wife and her sister started selling their crafts a little over a year ago. As they've grown their business, I've come to appreciate the fine art of crochet and the people who practice it. There's so much talent out there!

To all you yarn lovers I wish a happy International Crochet Month. Make something awesome!
